Managing Self- Care in a Busy Mom World

momlife selfcare Aug 15, 2024

Let's start out with a harsh reality.

All mom's are busy, sorry doll, that doesn't make you stand out. We all have full plates, we all have too much, we are all on the verge of being over stimulated.

On top of all the we live in a world that constantly demands more from us, and thinks that telling us to practice self-care will solve it all. It won't and mostly because we don't even know what self-care means.

The concept of self-care has gained a lot attention lately, with social media leading the charge to treat yo self. But in reality for most moms, self-care can seem like a luxury that’s difficult to find time for and can be another thing to spend money on.  I speak from experience when I tell you it doesn't have to be so complicated. Sometimes we need to pause and ask what does self-care truly mean, and how can we make it a manageable part of our daily lives?

Yes spa days sound amazing, girls trips are the thing of dreams but as I mentioned above most moms don't have time, energy or means to drop everything and go to Napa. I'd like to shift the focus away from the grandiose and simplify it. Let’s explore the meaning of self-care, some of the more complicated ideas, and practical tips for easy-to-accomplish self-care routines for moms.

What Self-Care Truly Means

Self-care is more than just pampering yourself; it’s about maintaining your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves making intentional choices to take care of your health and happiness, which in turn allows you to better care for others. Self-care can range from simple daily practices to more elaborate routines, but the goal is always the same: to nurture and rejuvenate yourself.

Complicated Self-Care Ideas

This is like an ideal, instagram type bucket list... but this is exactly what we are being told we need to to do achieve self care. It is important to see this list first to set the precedent. While the intention behind these self-care ideas is excellent, they can be complicated to manage, especially for a mom:

  1. Weekend Retreats: Going away for a weekend retreat sounds wonderful, but finding the time, money, and childcare can be daunting.

  2. Daily Spa Treatments: Regular spa visits can be expensive and time-consuming, making them unrealistic for most moms.

  3. Extensive Workout Routines: Committing to long, daily workout sessions can be difficult to sustain with a busy schedule.

  4. Frequent Social Gatherings: Keeping up with a busy social calendar can add stress rather than relieve it, especially when balancing family and work.

  5. Gourmet Cooking Classes: While cooking can be therapeutic, signing up for elaborate classes can be time-consuming and costly.

Easy-to-Accomplish Self-Care Tips for Moms

Ok now that we got that out of the way. Here are some simple ideas. I use a lot of these on the fly or in the moment when I'm feeling touched out, overstimulated  These are effective ways to incorporate self-care into your routine:

  1. Short Breaks: Take short breaks throughout the day to breathe deeply, stretch, or simply relax. Even five minutes can make a difference in reducing stress. I won't lie I often end up taking these breaks in the bathroom or when I step out to get the mail. (my husband knows when I say I'm doing that that I need the alone time)

  2. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water throughout the day (YES, I know so cliche but honestly we're all hauling those giant tumblers around so use it!). Staying hydrated can improve your energy levels and overall well-being. **ps while diet soda and iced coffee do contain water, actual H2O is the key ;-) **

  3. Healthy Snacks: Keep healthy snacks on hand to nourish your body and maintain your energy levels. Fresh fruit, nuts, and yogurt are great options.

  4. Mindful Moments: Practice mindfulness by taking a few moments each day to focus on your breath and be present in the moment. I like to do this while the eggos are in the toaster, or my coffee is brewing. This can help reduce anxiety and increase clarity.

  5. Connect with Nature: Touch grass as the kids would say. Spend a few minutes outside each day, whether it’s a walk around the block or sitting in your garden. Fresh air and nature can be incredibly rejuvenating.

  6. Read for Pleasure: Set aside time to read a book or magazine that you enjoy. Reading can be a great escape and a way to relax your mind. AUDIO BOOKS ARE ALSO AMAZING!!

  7. Gratitude Journal: Keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you’re grateful for each day. This simple practice can boost your mood and foster a positive mindset.

  8. Listen to Music: Create a playlist of your favorite songs and listen to it when you need a mood lift. Music can be a powerful tool for relaxation and joy. I use this one in the car with kids, we jam out to some early 2000's pop and Broadway bangers and it is also a great bonding time with the kids!!

  9. Warm Bath: Take a warm bath with Epsom salts or essential oils. This can help soothe sore muscles and provide a calming end to your day. (shower steamers are a great alternative if like me you don't have a mom size tub!)

  10. Early Bedtime: Prioritize getting enough sleep by going to bed a bit earlier. Adequate rest is crucial for your overall health and well-being.

  11. Digital Detox: Spend some time away from screens each day. Disconnecting from technology can help reduce stress and improve your focus. (Social media can also be cathartic but sometimes a break does the trick!)

  12. Gentle Exercise: Incorporate gentle exercises like yoga or walking into your routine. These activities can improve your physical health without the pressure of intense workouts.

Making Self-Care a Priority

Self-care is essential for everyone, but especially for moms because we  put others’ needs before our  own. By doing your best to implement simple, manageable self-care practices into your daily routine, you can nurture your well-being and maintain the energy and positivity needed to care for your family and achieve your goals.

Remember, self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming. Small, consistent actions can have a significant impact on your overall health and happiness. Prioritize yourself, even in small ways, and you’ll find that you’re better equipped to handle the demands of motherhood and life.
