If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve spent a lot of time putting everyone else’s needs first. As much as we love our families, it’s easy to lose ourselves along the way. But guess what? It is ok for you to regret that once you realize that it happened. Maybe it’s time to reclaim a piece of that “before kids” magic. Now don't get me wrong, I am a huge advocate for accepting the new you that is born the minute you become a mom. So let's not think of it as getting back to who you were but rather embracing and discovering who you are now.

Maybe the chick you were before kids loved being in the gym, maybe she was a foodie who tried all the new spots in town. While the thought of paying for a babysitter to hit up the new hibachi place in town might give you anxiety, it is probably beyond time that you start trying new things and getting in to the habit of putting yourself in the drivers seat.

Taking a risk and trying something new doesn’t just benefit you; it sets a powerful example for your kids and brings a renewed sense of joy and fulfillment. If you're at a total loss as to where to start. don't worry! I'm here to help.  Let’s dive into some safe, fun activities that will help you rediscover your passions, find new ones and feel fabulous once again.

Embrace the Adventure of a New Hobby

Remember when you used to dive into new interests with abandon? Whether it was painting, rock climbing, or ballroom dancing, rekindling that sense of adventure can be incredibly liberating. Try something that excites you and fits into your schedule. Here are a few ideas and where you can find access to options:

  • Creative Classes: Sign up for a local pottery or painting class. It’s a great way to explore your artistic side and meet like-minded people. Plus, the joy of creating something with your own hands is unbeatable! (Searching your local community rec center or even looking at community colleges for art classes is a great place to start)
  • Dance It Out: Whether it’s salsa, hip-hop, or even belly dancing, join a dance class and let the rhythm take over. Dancing is not only fun but also a great way to get those endorphins flowing. (You can often get a free trial for a local ymca or gym that would get you in the door for dance based group fitness classes!)

Test the Waters with a New Sport or Activity

Getting active doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym every day. There are plenty of fun and low-pressure ways to get your body moving while also trying something new:

  • Hiking Adventures: Explore local trails or nature parks. It’s a wonderful way to get some fresh air, clear your mind, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Plus, you can bring your little ones along and turn it into a family adventure! (Asking in a local facebook group is a quick way to find these kinds of resources, you can even ask anonymously if you're nervous)
  • Try a New Sport: Ever thought about trying out yoga, paddleboarding, or even martial arts? These activities can be both invigorating and meditative, giving you a chance to connect with yourself.

Take the Plunge with a Fun Challenge

Sometimes, a little friendly competition or challenge can reignite that fire within you. Here’s how to take the plunge:

  • Join a Book Club: Dive into a new book and engage in thought-provoking discussions with fellow readers. It’s a great way to stimulate your mind and make new connections. (Smaller local bookstores and or libraries are where you'll find answers for this option!)
  • Participate in a Fun Run: Look for local charity runs or obstacle courses. They’re not only a fun way to get active but also a chance to support a good cause. (So far from my jam but we all have those fitness loving friends who would be able to point us in the right direction!)

Explore New Culinary Horizons

Cooking is a fantastic way to experiment and have fun, especially when you get to try new recipes or cuisines. Here’s how you can spice up your kitchen routine:

  • Cooking Classes: Enroll in a cooking class to learn new techniques and recipes. From sushi-making to baking artisan bread, there’s a whole world of culinary delights waiting for you. (Community colleges, rec centers and co-op groceries will often host smaller cooking classes. Also groupon is a great place to find pasta classes or food and drink paring events)
  • Themed Dinner Nights: Host themed dinner parties with friends or family. It’s a fun way to try new recipes and enjoy a social evening. (Breweries, wineries and smaller grocery stores are known for partnering with chefs and restaurants for events like this)

Celebrate Small Wins and Embrace the Joy

It’s important to remember that trying something new doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. The goal is to have fun and embrace the joy of the experience. Celebrate your small victories and give yourself credit for stepping out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s learning a new skill or simply finding a moment of joy in your day, these experiences will help you reconnect with the vibrant, adventurous woman you are.
